Joseph Preston   Many IT Professionals purchase and implement storage solutions without entirely understanding their environment and its subsequent needs. This approach will luckily work for a small percentage of IT Professionals and their organizations, however, many find out too late that their lack of planning prior to implementation has caused detrimental performance degradation. With the major shift from P-to-V, IT Professionals, for-the-most-part are aware of concerns about over-committing hardware resources, overhead for failover clustering, single points of failure, etc. However, when it comes to the storage aspect they are mainly concerned about storage capacity in a very static sense, i.e. disk space. The definition of Capacity is: the ability to receive or contain. Many IT Professionals ignore “the ability to receive” portion of the definition, which at the end of the day can be the most important aspect in regards to your data being available. This is not, in any way, meant to be a malignant comment toward my fellow IT Professionals. It is simply a bi-product of declining IT budgets and the “cost-effective/more-for-less” approach toward IT that many of us are required to endure.
Throughout his 15 years in IT, Joseph Preston has held positions ranging from a field service representative dealing with the “Dreaded Y2K Disaster” to the Information Technology and Operations Director for a Multi-National Digital Media firm. Managing corporate infrastructures, 24/7 Datacenter Operations, and integrating disparate technologies and platforms through acquisitions has given Joseph a unique perspective of the IT industry in its entirety. Some major accomplishments over the past 5 years have been: integrating custom messaging and CDN platforms through 7 national and international acquisitions, consolidating 4 24/7 Datacenter environments while maintaining 99% uptime SLA’s, and performing approximately 400 P2V conversions in High Availability environments. As the current Manager of US Engineering and Support at StarWind Software, Joseph Preston works with pre and post-sale clients to plan, configure, and optimize their storage and virtualization infrastructure. With the rapidly increasing demands for disk consumption and the high cost associated with redundant storage, many companies are starting to look beyond the traditional Hardware Appliance storage vendors for solutions. As more organizations are starting to realize they can build their own cost-effective SAN solutions, Joseph is using his industry experience to help guide fellow IT Professionals toward building cost-effective, highly efficient, and stable storage networks.
